Power Shards

I don't know the mechanics of these things. All I know is that 1 power shard is consumed per hit and it slightly increases damage. My favorite part is that it can increase damage and then I saw them on sale from the vender. Every since that day during beta, I thought why the hell do these things cost so much? They are consumed as if they were arrows for a ranger and yet they are expensive considering what they are. So I hardly ever, if at all, use these shards. For one, they don't drop that often, two they are expensive.

I never using them. Do you know more about them? For example does they increase the magical damage?

I thought they can be useful when I'm fighting PvP, but unfortunately I'm always forgetting to activate them.
